Sultan Announces Thursday Beginning Of Ramadan Fasting

The month lasts for about 29-30 days (usually a month) based on the visual sighting of the crescent moon, according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths.

Some of the places where the moon was sighted include Sokoto, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Port-Harcourt, Jigawa, and Minna among others.

Abubakar made the announcement in a nationwide address at his palace, confirming the sighting of the moon on Wednesday.

According to Wikipedia, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.

"It is meant to inculcate righteousness and discipline, " he said.

In separate messages to his counterparts in all Islamic countries, Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iranian Parliament, offered greetings on the onset of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

He called on Muslims and all Nigerians to always remember men and women who are less fortunate than themselves and to help the government in confronting the challenges facing the nation. "It is important to use the opportunity of the fast to pray and seek the face of Allah for peace and progress of our dear country".

The Colombo Grand Mosque said that fasting month observed by Muslims in Sri Lanka, in view of Ramadan will commence from May 18.
