Petrol, Diesel Prices Hiked Again. Petrol Costs More Than R

The fuel prices in India have hit an all-time high since 2013 in major metro cities.

Petrol price in Kolkata today: While in Kolkata, petrol price stood at Rs 78.01 per litre up by 22 paisa compared to previous day price of Rs 77.79 per litre. At BPCL outlets, petrol was priced Rs. 79.35 and diesel Rs. 72.09. In Bhopal, Jalandhar and Patna, prices have crossed the Rs 80 mark and are now at Rs 80.89, Rs 80.55 and Rs 80.82 respectively.

Diesel prices are now Rs66.57 in New Delhi, Rs69.11 in Kolkata, Rs70.88 in Mumbai and Rs70.25 in Chennai today.

Meanwhile, Diesel will now cost Rs 66.57 in New Delhi, Rs 69.11 in Kolkata, Rs 70.88 in Mumbai and Rs 70.25 in Chennai.

Similarly, diesel and kerosene will each cost Rs 92 per litre within 15-kilometre distance in Kathmandu Valley and Rs 91.50 per litre in Dang and Pokhara respectively. The sharp increase in price came after a period of lull during the Karnataka assembly pre-poll period and prices were not hiked after April 24 till May 13. To add to that, Brent crude oil has touched $79.47 a barrel, its highest since November 2014. The companies need to catch up on market prices as 19-day price freeze has created a wider gap. Fuel prices were last hiked 19 days ago, and the substantial hike is likely to pinch commuters across the country.

The BJP-led government had raised excise duty nine times between November 2014 and January 2016 to shore up finances as global oil prices fell, but then also cut the tax once in October a year ago by Rs 2 a litre. The exchange rate of the Indian currency also plays a role in the price hike.
