The 32-year-old Neuer suffered a broken bone in his foot and only returned to training days ago but Germany coach Joachim Loew chose to take four keepers to the training camp in the Italian Alps from May 23-June 5. However, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper will be monitored during the training camp, reports Xinhua news agency.

Neuer must now prove his fitness at a fortnight-long training camp in northern Italy, which starts on Tuesday.

"Then we want to get a full idea, talk to him frankly and honestly, asking 'is it possible to play at the World Cup?'"

"We have to decide whether Neuer is able to put in his top performances".

Loew has been in charge since taking over from Jurgen Klinsmann after the 2006 World Cup.

World Cup-winning goalscorer, Mario Gotze has also been left out of Germany's squad.

"It's definitely not been his season. Personally, I'm very sorry for him", Loew said of Goetze.

"The planning horizon over four years is ideal, I'd like to think, especially because there might be some changes in the squad after the 2018 World Cup", Low said.

It is proving to be a tough time for Can as he is set to miss both teh Champions league final and World Cup, in the peak of his career.

Jerome Boateng is named in the squad despite the centre-back missing the end of the season with a thigh injury, while uncapped Freiburg striker Nils Petersen earns a place after scoring 15 Bundesliga goals last term and Mario Gomez is also included.

Die Mannschaft will take on Mexico, Sweden and South Korea in an intriguing looking Group F in Russian Federation.
