This year's memorial is held in memory of the 16 Texas law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty in the past year.

"And tonight as we formally dedicate the names of these men and women; we honor their courage and we salute their sacrifice".

Hawkins County's fallen law enforcement officers include Gerald Gibson, on July 12, 2000; John Wesley Wright on August 16, 1988; and Drew Harrell on June 15, 1937.

Allery was fatally shot by 28-year-old Melvin Gene Delong, of Belcourt, after a pursuit on January 18, 2017. I want to take this time to thank all of the police officers, detectives, reserve police officers, 911 communications personnel and police department support staff for their service to our community.

The national monument now contains the names of 21,541 officers from all 50 states, USA territories and national agencies who died in the line of duty throughout US history since 1791.
