Pence also praised Mrs. Trump, calling her a "remarkable woman" whom the "blessed" to have as its first lady. "Honest wishes for her speedy recovery".

First lady Melania Trump underwent kidney surgery Monday and is expected to stay in the hospital for several days, her spokeswoman said.

Mrs. Trump, 48, had the embolization procedure Monday morning.

Monday evening, the president posted on Twitter that he was heading over to the military medical facility to see the first lady.

Embolization usually is an outpatient procedure or requires just one night in the hospital, he said.

Thankfully, Melania's procedure was completed successfully without complications, and many are wishing her a speedy recovery.

By far the most common diagnosis that leads to this kind of procedure is a benign growth called an angiomyolipoma - a tangle of blood vessels, muscle and fat.

Mrs. Trump joined her husband last month to host the prime minister of Japan for a two-day summit at the Trumps' Florida estate, and the Trumps hosted the president of France at the White House on a three-day state visit, including a lavish state dinner. "That's because she is the first lady", said Dr. Jeffrey Cadeddu, a professor of urology and radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

"The doctors at Walter Reed are expecting a full recovery".

The White House has not offered any additional details on the first lady's condition. "Thank you to all of the well-wishers!" he wrote in a tweet.

Melania will spend the rest of the week in hospital.

That's according to a White House official who was not authorized to disclose the plan and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Mrs. Trump will likely be hospitalized for the rest of the week.

But Dr. Joseph V. Bonventre, chief of the renal unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston said that it was unlikely Mrs. Trump would have a biopsy on this type of tumor and that doctors probably chose to conduct the embolization procedure to prevent a benign tumor from growing by starving it of blood, and therefore oxygen.
