Cannes Leaders Adopt Gender Equality Pledge

Eighty-two women including Cate Blanchett and Ava DuVernay marched up the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday to protest gender inequality at the festival and in the wider film industry.

Members of the group included actresses, directors and other women in the film industry, including Kristen Stewart, Salma Hayek and "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins, The Associated Press reports. 82 women including Blanchett who is president of the jury and Stewart took part in the protest to signify the 82 female directors (7 of whom were part of mixed gender teams) that have premiered at the festival since 1946 compared to 1,645 male directors.

The festival chiefs were said to have met with gender-parity groups from five different countries in Cannes, and now aim to reach out to additional film festivals around the world.

Cate Blanchett and Agnès Varda led a women's march on the Cannes red carpet.

"We hope that it will reinforce the realization that the world is not the same anymore", Fremaux said. In the same period 1688 male directors have climbed these very same stairs. "The world has changed".

The signing of the pledge coincided with 2018 jury head Blanchett's birthday.

"We must question our history and our habits", the Cannes festival director added, calling on other global film festivals to follow suit. Husson is one of three female filmmakers out of the 21 movies in competition for the Palme d'Or this year.

Cannes has come under repeated criticism in recent years over its poor record of selecting female filmmakers.

Monday's pledge also calls for the festival to compile statistics breaking down the gender of filmmakers and major crew members for all films submitted to Cannes. The move comes as the topics of inclusion and equality have been front and centre here.
