Should Red Bull invoke team orders in Spain?

With the laps we put in, I thought we would have been a couple of tenths from pole not, what was it, six or seven.

Verstappen and team-mate Daniel Ricciardo had lined up on the third row of the grid behind the two Mercedes and Ferraris and Horner once again conceded Red Bull were being made to pay for their lack of extra power in qualifying. I chipped away on my lap time by a few hundreds, but it wasn't enough and they [Mercedes] put in some belters at the end.

More recently, Force India pairing Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez clashed on so many occasions in 2017 that their team threatened to sideline the pair should they attempt to go wheel-to-wheel again, and Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed in both Spain and Austria in 2016 while fighting for the lead.

Red Bull hadn't looked to be challenging for pole in any free practice sessions, only managing second in free practice two, and this continued in qualifying.

Button says he can understand why Ricciardo is in no rush to make a decision on his future.

"We are in a hard position because we want to not only beat each other but try and attack Kimi, who starts in front of us".

The spot sets up conditions for Sunday's race that Red Bull doesn't particularly want to happen anytime soon.

"Now from turn 1 to turn 4 it's flat-out with corners in it", he explained. We talk about costs and being responsible but what has just been introduced is a completely new concept which will cost millions and millions of pounds.

"We just don't have that power mode for Q3", Max Verstappen bemoaned.

Like his team mate, Verstappen was also unsure how things stood in terms of which tyre compounds were performing better here this weekend, or what the strategy will be for the race. "I saw Sebastian approaching but I knew I had relatively fresh tyres so it would be hard for him to overtake, this allowed me to manage the situation quite well". So I hope from now onwards, it just goes in that direction, because I don't think I need to do anything different.

"Even for me it was a guess, so a bit tricky". Over one lap maybe you could go a bit faster, but in the long run it would just fall apart.

"So a lot of people will be choosing the Soft and the Medium".
