Agony from cancer pushes former Maharashtratop cop to kill himself

Mr Roy had been on a long medical leave as he was suffering from cancer.

The Mumbai police, which has registered an accidental death report, said in a statement, "A suicide note has been found which states that he is ending his life as he is frustrated with the disease (cancer)".

He also made possible the arrest of Vindu Dara Singh for alleged links to bookies in the 2013 IPL spot fixing, the last of the high profile cases he was investigating.

"The entire police department is shocked and shattered", said Deepak Deoraj, deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai Police spokesperson.

"He had been suffering from cancer for almost two years and it seems he died due to the frustration", former Mumbai Police commissioner M.N. Singh told ThePrint.

Himanshu Roy's suicide may not be connected to the cancer he was diagnosed with.

"Shocking. Mumbai Top Cop Himanshu Roy commits suicide at his residence".

Roy, who still had a few years of service left, also played a key role in setting up of Mumbai's first cyber crime cell. It is then that cancer was detected, forcing Roy to receive medical attention in Mumbai, Pune as well as overseas.

One of the police officers stationed outside his residence said, "I had interacted with him once in 2012, and he was very cordial with me". Singh added that Roy was barely interacting with people as he had taken seriously ill. "Cancer treatment causes side effects such as hair loss hair and facial changes, limiting a patient's social interaction".

As Crime Branch chief, Roy oversaw and cracked quickest possible time the sensational murder of journalist-writer J Dey, who was gunned down by a group of motorbike-riding gangsters at Powai in north-east Mumbai on June 11, 2011. We have recovered a suicide note in which he had stated that he was exhausted of his ailment and would like to depart peacefully.
