Ranked Halep loses to Pliskova in Madrid quarterfinals

Meanwhile, Britain's Kyle Edmund followed up his surprise win over Novak Djokovic by beating Belgium's David Goffin on Thursday to march into the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

Edmund will face a Canadian, either Denis Shapovalov or Milos Raonic, for a place in the semifinals, with Alexander Zverev a possible foe in the last four.

Also, Dusan Lajovic fought back from 0-4 in the decisive tiebreaker to stun fourth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) for his first career win against a top-10 ranked player.

Halep, the two-time defending champion, struck 20 winners and broke Pliskova's serve three times as she extended her winning streak in the Spanish capital to 15 straight matches.

Sharapova beaten by Bertens Maria Sharapova's French Open preparations were dealt a blow yesterday as she was beaten in three sets by Kiki Bertens at the Madrid Open.

Both players served at 70% but it was Karolina who drew the most from it, dropping 10 points in nine service games and losing serve only once.

"Maybe I didn't play my best game, but maybe she didn't let me play my best game".

"I think I played one of my best matches this year for sure, and for sure on clay in my life", said sixth-seed Pliskova.

World No. 1 Simona Halep trounced an out of sorts Elise Mertens to reach the third round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday and stay on course for her third consecutive title at the event.

Halep got off to a positive start by breaking Pliskova for a 2-0 lead, only for the Czech to take the break right back to swing the match in her favor.

She also showed great fighting spirit in the decider after going 4-1 down, saving eight break points to hold her serve and then break again to make it 4-3.

Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic will now await Halep in the last 16 as the Romanian continues to prepare for the French Open, where she has twice gone the distance only to finish runner-up.

Mertens looked tentative and Halep made her pay, too many unforced errors costing the 22-year-old as the top seed defended brilliantly and had plenty of joy with her potent backhand down the line.

"I never really thought I can beat her", said Pliskova after the match.

Pliskova's only prior victory from a previous seven matches against Halep was in the 2016 Fed Cup.

The Netherlands' Kiki Bertens came from behind to beat Russia's Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 elsewhere today.

The Stuttgart victor will now meet 2-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova who knocked out Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia defeated Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of thetournament for the first time.
