Arsene Wenger blames poor officiating for Leicester defeat

Wenger will lead Arsenal for the final time in Sunday's league match against Huddersfield Town.

"I was tearing up when I woke to the news he's leaving", admitted Ali Rizwan, a 16-year-old fan from Ancaster, Canada.

A 3-1 defeat at Leicester on Wednesday leaves Arsenal without an away league point in 2018.

Speaking after the the defeat, his penultimate game in charge, Wenger said "overall it's very sad" that his players did not get more out of the game.

Arsenal, meanwhile, had managed to put some of the gloss back on their performance by dismantling Burnley 5-0 in Wenger's last home game as manager. Wenger would have liked the announcement of his departure to have been delayed until the end of the season to avoid all the attention. Sometimes you think: "'OK, it's going well for him, keep him in'". "It destroys me because we were in front of the rest of the world, and now we want to be behind".

Wenger says his successor can not be afraid to bring fresh ideas to Arsenal, who have missed out on Champions League qualification in each of the past two seasons. They have also got Max Allegri and Mikel Arteta among the candidates to succeed Arsene Wenger this summer as they look to reduce the options to five names they will present to majority shareholder Stan Kroenke.

He engaged in long-running feuds with Jose Mourinho and Alex Ferguson, while battling several bosses in touchline rows that turned physical.

On what was the last of his pre-match press conferences, Wenger predicted the biggest ever overhaul in the structure of European club competition and was also insistent that his "strongest and best" ever period as Arsenal manager was the decade after 2006.

"But if you have Real Madrid v Barcelona, or Real Madrid v Arsenal, or Manchester United v Bayern Munich every week the audiences will be good". Control the animal that is inside you.

'[That involves] controlling the animal that is inside you and that helps me a lot as I've went through some fantastic periods in my life and through some more hard periods'. "That's the thing that matters".
