City Honors is once again among the top high schools in the country, but it's not the only Western New York school being honored. The school's top rating came in 2012 when it was ranked 23 in the nation.

The rankings were created by evaluating more than 20,500 public high schools nationwide, identifying those that best serve all students and assess the degree to which students are prepared for college-level coursework.

The schools were first ranked based on whether students were performing "better than statistically expected" based on their state's high school proficiency tests. "Congratulations and thank you for your hard work!"

To calculate the rankings, schools are scored on their performance on math and reading assessments, relative to the averages in their respective states, and the proportion of their student body who are racial minorities or economically disadvantaged.

Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern in Groton, Greenwich High School, Staples High School in Westport, Darien High School, Wilton High School, Hall High School and Conard High School both in West Hartford, Weston High School, Simsbury High School, and New Canaan High School were the remaining schools that were awarded gold medals in the U.S News ranking.

U.S. News also noted that while charter schools are public institutions, they are exempt from some state or local regulations governing traditional public schools.
