Gennady Golovkin Annihilates Vanes Martirosyan In Two Rounds

The Armenian-American fighter moved up to middleweight to face the terrifying enigma known as Gennady Golovkin and he learned that there are levels to the fight game.

With the lucrative fight against Alvarez scuttled until this fall at the earliest, Golovkin was eventually able to put together a replacement bout in Southern California, where he built up a strong following with a series of title defenses at StubHub Center and the Forum.

However, the second round was one way traffic, as Golovkin unleashed a succession of rapid fire punches.

The two times he did fight for a 154-pound world title he lost decisions, to Demetrius Andrade for a vacant belt in 2013 and, in a rematch of a head-butt induced technical draw, to then-titlist Erislandy Lara in May 2016. After Alvarez failed random drug testing in February, canceling the Canelo vs. GGG fight, Spike O'Sullivan almost claimed the ticket but talks fell through when the money on the table failed to entice the Irishman.

Betfair Sportsbook traders want nothing to do with taking Gennady on in this fight and that makes ideal sense.

Which brings the point to this - How did an albeit unknown fighter like Martirosyan come to be paired up against a both feared and respected, likely to be in the hall-of-fame someday, champion like Gennady Golovkin? Imagine [what he would want to fight] Golovkin, Anthony Joshua money.

Golovkin, nicknamed Triple G, is the current WBA, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight champion. "First of all, for me, this is a sport".

"I have lots of belts", said Golovkin. With a victory in a fight he didn't have to take, Golovkin would tie Bernard Hopkins' middleweight record with his 20th consecutive title defense.

The 36-year-old Golovkin also owns the IBF title, but the IBF declined to sanction Golovkin-Martirosyan as a title fight. "We've left no stone unturned, we've had an awesome camp, if they pulled him (Forero) out today, and brought in a world champion, we are ready to go, we are ready to fight and ready to win".

"I've got this opportunity to shock the world".

Golovkin is bothered by it, but he's still fighting Martirosyan. Golovkin continued to trade punches in the second round, hoping a solid punch would change the complexion of the match, and it did.

Under his Nevada suspension, Alvarez does not have to take any drug tests until a month before his next fight. The veteran boxing writer said WBC light middleweight champ Jermell Charlo and WBO middleweight titlist Billy Joe Saunders are seriously being considered.
