"The agitation of the AMU students is not related to the portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah", the varsity said. During his Karnataka election tour, Mr Adityanath said he was against honouring Pakistan's founder.

Apparently addressing AMU students, he said it is one of the leading universities in the country and they (the students) should be aware of the expectations the country has from them.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also reacted on this controversy saying that the person who was behind the partition of India can not be accorded respect here. "The students of AMU have been provoked", he told ANI. Soon after his request, members of the Hindu Jagran Manch arrived at the university campus demanding the removal of the portrait. The students explained that they do not mind the poster being removed, but have an issue with people gatecrashing the campus and disturbing the environment.

Before Mr Ansari arrived on the campus, a large number of Hindutva activists gathered outside the Baab-i-Syed gate and started chanting slogans against Mr Jinnah.

They said members of certain outfits entered the campus and disrupted the peaceful academic environment there.

Fahad Ahemad who is also Alumnae of AMU said, "Police showed their biased nature. You are an Indian today because of them".

Amidst protests, Section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) was imposed in Aligarh and internet services were suspended till midnight to prevent the communal flare-up. Tariq Mansoor visited the students, who were injured after police restored lathi charge on Wednesday.

"We strongly and unequivocally condemn the biased attitude of the police force, the supposed to be protectors of the society and demand immediate action according to the law of the land against the perpetrators/ conspirators of this unfortunate and unwarranted incident", he added.

Furthermore, the protest has also been joined by the students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Allahabad University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
