Pak Interior Minister shot at in suspected assassination bid

Iqbal had been attending the meeting in his constituency in Narowal district when he was shot in the right arm.

"Ahsan Iqbal was targeted and shot in the arm", Asim Khan, a special aide to the politician, told AFP. The attacker, identified as Abid Hussain, was arrested by police.

"Allah may always keep Ahsan Iqbal in His protection".

Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi called it a tragic incident and prayed for Iqbal's early recovery. His son, Ahmed, said he is out of danger and will be shifted to a hospital in Lahore.

She narrated that four days back, a news was being aired on a television channel, repeatedly showing the vehicles of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as his protocol.

Considered the brains behind the party's development agenda, he previously headed up the planning ministry.

Born in 1958, Ahsan Iqbal is a Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart who now holds the post of Minister of Interior and Minister for Planning and Development, under the premiership of Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Iqbal is also a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz).

He said no more details were available.

The statement did not specifically mention any suspect in custody or any links to the party.

Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto and other Pakistan Peoples Party leaders also condemned the attack, as did Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan. He said the team of doctors would decide what procedure to follow. "A comprehensive security strategy is required before the elections", he added.

The attack was swiftly condemned by the global community, including the United States ambassador and the French embassy, as Pakistanis voiced fears it represented an attempt to "weaken democracy" ahead of the federal elections, widely expected to be held late this summer.
