IMD warns of thunderstorms in 13 states today

Following the forecast, the Haryana government has chose to shut all government and private schools on May 7- 8.

Between the fears of severe storm and rain, the Haryana Government has announced holidays for all government and private schools for both these days.

Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday said, thunderstorms accompanied by squall, hail and heavy rain are likely to occur in at least 13 states and two Union Territories across the country Monday. State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma took the decision on Sunday following the warning by the MeT department about the possibility of thunderstorm with squall hitting isolated places of the state on May 7 and 8.

However, according to Met officials, the current storms are not expected to be as intense as the storms that struck north India on May 4, resulting in more than 100 deaths from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

DC Mukul Kumar said, "Haryana weather department has issued a high alert for two days and they will give the exact updates of three hours in advance before any major alert and we will keep on informing about the weather and their alerts". Eight people were killed in Telangana, six in Uttarakhand and two in Punjab; almost 100 people were injured in these three states. Two persons were killed and as many injured after being struck by lightning in Jharkhand's Saraikela-Kharswan district.

"It further warns of thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, interior Karnataka and Kerala".

Thunderstorm accompanied with squall and hail is likely to hit Himachal Pradesh. Heavy rains with thunderstorm and hail storm have been predicted in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on Tuesday.
