Russia's Su-30 fighter aircraft crashes into Mediterranean Sea in Syria

Fighter FSI Russian su-30 crashed over the Mediterranean sea, both pilots were killed.

"Both pilots died on the spot", the statement, released by the ministry, added, according to Anadolu Agency.

As UNIAN reported earlier, a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet went down in Syria on Thursday, May 3.

The airbase is far from frontlines and the ministry said that it suspected an accident, rather than enemy fire, had brought down the plane.

According to preliminary estimates, a bird hit the plane's engine. "The plane was not struck by any projectile".

Pictures have emerged on social media claiming to show the scene of the crash and smoke rising over the water.

The U.S. has killed up to 200 of Russian combatants in strikes against Moscow ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last month.

Russian Federation utilizes the base to launch its warplanes that regularly carry out ground attacks against rebel groups, with a number of special forces and ground troops also being deployed.

Arab media revealed photographs that allegedly captured the moment the Russian Su-30SM fighter jet crashed.

In Syria, the jets are often used to launch air-to-ground missiles at enemy combatants and to escort other military convoys.
