New York Knicks: 5 reasons David Fizdale is an excellent hire

David Fizdale has agreed to become the next head coach of the Knicks, reports ESPN.

Fizdale spent eight seasons with the Heat as an assistant or associate coach and was there during Miami's recent four-year Finals run.

He ends up becoming the 11th Knicks coach since Jeff Van Gundy resigned in the 2001-02 season.

He was previously the head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Following the Grizzlies' 7-12 start in the 2017-18 campaign, Fizdale was sacked by the organization. The team also has Tim Hardaway Jr. and Emmanuel Mudiay, the No. 7 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, as pieces to try to build around. "He'll be able to turn them around and make them respectable". He took them to a 43-39 record during the 2016-17 season and reached the Western Conference playoffs.

According to league sources, Fizdale will return to NY for a news conference early next week. Yes, he was an assistant with the Heat during LeBron's tenure there, and the two are reportedly close. Given the Knicks' had the 18th best offense in the league, tighten up defensively will be crucial for them, particularly at least until Porzingis returns.

For New York, this is the signaling of a new era of sorts. In fact, many connected dots to Fizdale's next stop and where James could sign in free agency this summer. This is the first offseason that Perry and Mills will be working together. The 33-year-old small forward is expected to be targeted by several National Basketball Association teams who dreamt of contending for the title next season. The process began last summer when they traded Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder and is expected to continue apace, with the Knicks set to clear significant salary cap space next summer.
