Colorado Springs stores, library district to celebrate Free Comic Book Day

Here's how Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) works: You don't get to walk in the door and pluck an expensive back-issue comic off the wall at your favorite comic store.

Choose from titles such as "Avengers/Captain America", "Disney Princess", "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers", "Pokemon", "Adventure Time with Fionna &Cake", "Star Wars Adventures" and more. Young patrons can get their faces painted for free between 11 a.m. and approximately 3 p.m.

Offers: 50 distinct Free Comic Book Day titles.

On Saturday, several local comic books stores will be participating in Free Comic Book Day.

The state thanks sponsors Friends of the Library of Hawaii, Gecko Books &Comics and Collector Maniacs.

Speeding Bullet, Wizards Asylum Comics and Games and DZ Comics and Gaming in Moore will be among other brick-and-mortar stores around the world participating in a day that promotes literacy and interest in comic books.

"All of our locations will be handing out free comics", said Whitney Springer, teen services librarian at the East Library.

Frequently film tie-ins have helped push publicity to Free Comic Book Day.

Artist and author Dwight Lockhart will also be a special guest at APL, where he will showcase and sign his comic book, The Skywatchers 2120.

"I love art, and I love a good story", he said.

"On Free Comic Book Day the comics are special in that they are special issues", she said. "It also shows that kids and adults can enjoy comics; they're not just a niche thing for the geeks who watch 'The Big Bang Theory.' Comics are for everyone and there is a comic for everyone".
