Barbara Bush in "failing health"

A family spokesman says former first lady Barbara Bush is in "failing health" and won't seek additional medical treatment.

Mrs. Bush, 92, has been hospitalized several times in Houston, Texas, over the past year to be treated for chronic pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure, her family has said.

Most recently, she was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital on Good Friday suffering from shortness of breath.

"She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving", said the brief statement from the office of former president George H.W. Bush.

In January, Mrs. Bush and her husband were hospitalized at the same time.

Barbara served as first lady during George H.W. Bush's presidency from 1989 to 1993.

The former Barbara Pierce married George Herbert Walker Bush in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II when she was twenty years old.

She was known for her trademark white hair, a trait that was born of tragedy when her brown hair began to gray in the 1950s, while her 3-year-old daughter Pauline, known to her family as Robin, underwent treatment for leukemia and eventually died in October 1953, according to the Associated Press.

He did not elaborate as to the nature of Mrs Bush's health problems.

Bush also revealed her secret for a long life: medical attention. "I'm not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!" "He is the best - thoughtful and loving".

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tweeted that Bush "is a comfort to her friends & family teaching us all how to live full of faith, love & humor". Barbara Pierce was born in NY and met her future husband at age 16.
