Paul Ryan: Kevin McCarthy Is 'Right Person' to Be Next Speaker

He his support behind his current deputy, House Republican leader McCarthy of California, to take over as House speaker.

"I fully anticipate handing the gavel over to the next speaker of the House after this term, and I think Kevin's the right guy to step up".

Before the race to succeed him even officially got underway, outgoing Speaker Paul Ryan endorsed Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., in an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press" that will air Sunday. "I think we'll have a seamless transition".

"The president has a great relationship with Kevin McCarthy, but in terms of an announcement on who he wants to see as the next speaker, I don't have any announcements on that", Sanders said. While Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Louisiana, has said repeatedly he wouldn't challenge McCarthy in a head-to-head race, a leadership source told CNN earlier this week that Scalise's intention was to be ready if McCarthy couldn't garner the votes. Ryan said he wished to spend more time with his family in Janesville, Wis.

"One of the reasons why I was comfortable making this decision, is because we have a very capable leadership team", Ryan said of decision not to run for re-election.

Neither McCarthy nor Scalise has announced he will run for speaker.

McCarthy, 53, has served in the House since 2007 and has occupied the number-two spot since 2014.

To become the next speaker, McCarthy must win the majority of votes in the chamber, where Republicans now have a majority.
