Day before Ambedkar Jayanti, another statue vandalised in UP

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani's supporters and Bharatiya Janata Party workers clashed in Ahmedabad near a statue of BR Ambedkar on the occasion of the social reformer's birth anniversary on Saturday, ANI reported.

Drawing of Dr Ambedkar Portrait of 15X10 feets by using 2500 kg salts and 40 kg different colours placed at the premises of Divisional Social Welfare office at Kokadpura, is the main attraction of Jayanti. Barring this protest, there was no untoward incident in any part of the state. The agitators were detained by the Mehsana Police later as they made attempt to purify the statute with milk.

The three-day celebration in Mhow - also known as Dr Ambedkar Nagar - to mark the birth anniversary of Ambedkar kicked off on Thursday, the official said here.

After Gandhi and other leaders garlanded the statue and left, the members of the community washed the statue with milk and water, saying the BJP leaders' presence had "polluted" the atmosphere.

Late on Friday night, clashes broke out between Dalits and a Hindu outfit in Phagwara in Punjab over renaming of a junction.

Outside the country, Ambedkar's birth anniversary became a rallying point at the United Nations where a group of Sikhs held a protest against the atrocities against minorities and Dalits in India. In a tweet message, Mr Modi said, respected Babasaheb gave hope to lakhs of people belonging to the poorest and marginalised sections of the society.

On this occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind paid floral tributes to Dr B.R. Ambedkar here at Parliament House Lawns this morning. He said the country remains indebted to Babasaheb for his efforts towards the making of our Constitution.

Addressing the event, Adityanath said that the BJP government has worked tirelessly for the upliftment of Dalits.
