Unnao gangrape case: CBI detained MLA, registers 3 cases inquiry underway

The reaction of Yogi Adityanath came after the CBI arrested rape accused and BJP MLA from Bangarmau (Unnao) Kuldeep Singh Sengar from his Indiranagar residence in Lucknow early on Friday morning.

Sengar has been accused of rape, intimidation and assault and had a case lodged against him by the Unnao police on Thursday under sections 363, 366, 376 and 506 of Indian Penal Code pertaining to rape, abduction, and intimidation and provisions of POCSO Act. Earlier in the day, the Allahabad High Court ordered his immediate arrest, saying he was "influencing" the law and order machinery.

Frustrated with the alleged police inaction on her complaint and coercion from influential people, the victim had attempted self-immolation in front of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on April 8.

The CBI is learnt to have also sought to know, in detail, from the legislator on where he was when the father of the victim was being thrashed at the Makhi police station and what all he tried thereafter to save his brother and four other aides. Unnao legislator Sengar is now being interrogated at the CBI office, but has not been arrested yet.

"As soon as the matter came to the notice of the government on April 9, we immediately constituted a Special Investigation Team and initiated action in the matter.the policemen and doctors found guilty in the SIT report were suspended", he told reporters in Chitrakoot.

The accused MLA had then visited Adityanatah in Lucknow. However, the family alleged that he was murdered by Sengar. The victim's father died on Monday in police custody.

During this period, the CBI also collected various evidence with regards to the two cases for which it has filed three FIRs.

The Uttar Pradesh government had referred the matter to the CBI which registered the case after getting reference from the centre last night. Despite media reports about Sengar's arrest, especially after the high court categorically asked for it, the CBI officials kept on stating till late in the evening that he was still under detention and not arrested.
