Kevin Durant will opt out of contract and restructure deal with Warriors

Last offseason, Durant took nearly $10 million less than what he could have earned on a max salary which allowed Golden State to resign role players like Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

Kevin Durant will enter the free-agent market this offseason but likely won't be available for long.

According to Chris Haynes of ESPN, Durant plans to opt out of his contract in the upcoming summer free agency period to restructure his contract with the Warriors - which either means Durant wants more money from Golden State, or is going to take another pay cut, which is scary for the rest of the league.

Durant accepted about $10 million less than what he would've got on a max deal when he signed a two-year, $51.3 million contract with the opt-out clause, which let the Warriors keep Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston, per Haynes.

Durant is earning much less than what a player of his caliber should be getting. "But I'm enjoying every moment of it, so I'm not trying to look too far down the line", Durant said. Each year of his deal could escalate.

If Durant has no intentions of leaving the Bay Area, the Warriors are desperate to hold onto one of their stars, who is averaging 26.6 points, 5.4 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game this season.

Durant told The Athletic in March that the contract was something that worked with him at the time.

He's having a great season this year, but he hasn't been at peak form.

Unfortunately for the rest of the league, there is nearly no chance Durant opts out in search of a change of scenery. His earnings would grow to $38.2 million in the first year and the option year would be worth $41 million.

The 29-year-old's Golden State tenure has worked out splendidly in terms of team success, as the Warriors won 67 regular-season games in 2016-17 en route to their second championship in three years.
