New 2019 Ford Focus: this is it!

Thanks to sleeker, lower profile body elements as well as an active grille shutter, air-curtain inlets, an optimised rear spoiler and underbody shielding, the Focus is more aerodynamic than before.

Falling in line with the new Ka and Fiesta, Ford will offer sports-tuned ST-Line, luxurious Vignale and SUV-inspired Active versions alongside the Zetec and Titanium trims. Rear passengers get almost three extra inches of leg room over the outgoing version, and Ford says that the new Focus has more interior volume than the old auto.

Diesel choices include the 1.5-liter EcoBlue and the 2-liter EcoBlue powerplants. That suite includes: adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and speed sign recognition, lane-centering assist, adaptive front lighting, Active Park Assist and Evasive Steering Assist.

Ford is also claiming another first for the Focus: "glare-free" high beam that "removes the guilt of accidentally dazzling other drivers and helps users see more of the road ahead at night".

Ford's new sedans and hatchbacks are to hit a Chinese marketplace where consumers have been clamouring for crossover sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), which along with multi-purpose vehicles such as minivans now account for almost one half of China's demand for passenger vehicles.

With the 2019 Ford Focus, the engineers at the automobile company have made some notable internal changes to previous models, although the exterior is still the same size as previous models.

The Chinese market is too large and too important for Ford Motor ignore so the company is planning to launch five new midsize models this year in a bid to boost its fortunes in the world's biggest market.

The sporty ST-Line grade stands out with an aggressive rear diffuser, large roof-mounted rear spoiler and front apertures, and unique lower wing elements created to direct air to the air-curtain inlets.

The Active won't be available in the United Kingdom until the first quarter of 2019, so precise details about the car's pricing and specification aren't available, but expect the vehicle to be sold at a premium over the standard model.

The next Focus will go on sale in Europe and China this year.

SYNC 3, housed in the eight-inch color touchscreen, is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Under the bonnet, customers can choose from two engines - one petrol, one diesel - with five states of tune between them - with the latest version of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol bookending the power range with 83bhp the least potent option and 123bhp the most.

Ford describes the interior of the redesigned Focus as more "refined and upscale".

Depending on variant, a 675 Watt ten-speaker sound system from B&O Play is available.

Full information regarding USA drivetrains will be announced closer to the car's launch in summer 2019, but two new 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged engines will be available in other markets, one as a three-cylinder and the other as a four-cylinder; it's unclear which engine will make it to the US, or whether both will. In particular, according to the manufacturer, the new Ford Focus became 88 kg lighter. The next-generation Focus will be tailored to each global region.

The 2020 Focus will ride on all-new suspension and chassis, which Ford says will provide a 20 percent increase in rigidity for body control. The engines can be paired to an optional eight-speed automatic that actively assesses vehicle and environmental information to adjust clutch pressures for smoother gearshifts.
