Blackbuck case: Salman Khan to spend a night in jail

He had been sentenced to prison terms of between one and five years in related cases before being acquitted by appeals courts for lack of evidence. Later, he was taken to the Jodhpur Central Jail.

Salman, the main accused in the case and who was driving the vehicle that night, was also fined Rs 10,000 by CJM Dev Kumar Khatri.

A Jodhpur court on Thursday convicted Salman Khan in a two-decade-old blackbuck poaching case while his other co-stars Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Saif Ali Khan from "Hum Sath Sath Hain" were acquitted in the 1998 blackbuck killing case. Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam were given the benefit of doubt.

Khan has made a series of blockbuster hits in the last few years with the latest in December, "Tiger Zinda Hai", grossing more than 3 billion rupees ($52 million) at the box office. Khan, who wore black sunglasses and a figure-hugging black shirt, was escorted under heavy guard to jail where he will spent the night behind bars.

Salman's bail papers have been prepared and the hearing on his bail application will take place on Friday morning in the Jodhpur sessions court.

The Jodhpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on March 25 under Jodhpur District Presiding Officer Devkumar Khatri had issued April 5 for the judgment in the 20-year-old case.

Today, the court sentenced him to five years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, prosecution lawyer Mahipal Bishnoi said. "He, on spotting a herd of black bucks, shot at and killed two of them", public prosecutor Bhawani Singh Bhati had said.

All the accused, some of them accompanied by their family members, were in the courtroom when the verdict was read out. There are three films already announced. "So, approximately Rs 600 crore...", trade analyst Girish Wankhede told PTI. "This case shouldn't be seen in the same way with the ones in which Khan has been acquitted by the High Court". Sources said his legal troubles will not really affect Race 3, as some patchwork and dubbing are all that's left. His white Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly crashed into American Express Bakery at Hill Road at Bandra in Mumbai, killing one person and injuring four on September 28, 2002.
