Pacquiao relishing clash with Matthysse in KL

Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya, whose company promotes Matthysse, wrote on social media that Pacquiao will challenge for Matthysse's WBA "regular" welterweight title on July 14 in Malaysia.

Matthysse (39-4, 36 KOs), 35, won the vacant secondary welterweight title with an eighth-round knockout of Thailand native Tewa Kiram in January.

The 39-year-old Filipino senator and army colonel recently announced plans to launch his own cryptocurrency, and has been out of the ring since a controversial defeat to Australian Jeff Horn in Brisbane last summer. He is ranked second in the division and has an overall record of 57-6-2.

Pacquiao will go into the fight without his longtime trainer, International Boxing Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, overseeing his camp or corner.

Manny Pacquiao will not be trained by Freddie Roach ahead of his July fight against Lucas Matthysse, according to ESPN's Dan Rafael.

Pacquiao had Horn on the ropes in the ninth round and looked poised to score his first knockout victory in nine years but allowed his opponent to survive the onslaught, with the hometown challenger dubbed "The Hornet" rallying in the last three rounds to hand the Filipino the stinging setback.

Koncz declined to discuss Pacquiao's promotional status with Top Rank, with whom there has been an apparent fracture, but he said they would work together on this fight and, hopefully, on another fight in the fall. We're working on the press conference now.

One reason Pacquiao could be working with Arum on the PPV and North American distribution of the Matthysse fight, could be due to wanting a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko.

Promoted by Arum, Lomachenko, a former World Boxing Organization super featherweight champ, is set to challenge WBA lightweight titleholder Jorge Linares on May 12 at New York's famed Madison Square Garden. Pacquiao is coming off a loss in which most knowledgeable boxing fans say he was robbed by bias judges.

Manny Pacquiao will indeed get his welterweight title fight against Lucas Matthysse with the help of a promoter other than Top Rank.
