ESPN Reports Keenum Will Sign With Broncos

Siemian and Brock Osweiler, another Broncos quarterback who will enter free agency Wednesday, are expendable now that Denver has added Keenum to a quarterback room that will return former first-round quarterback Paxton Lynch and seventh-rounder Chad Kelly.

The quarterback who last season led the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship game for the first time since 2009 reportedly intends on signing with the Denver Broncos.

Others who reached agreements were Kirk Cousins (Minnesota), Sam Bradford (Arizona), Teddy Bridgewater (Jets), Mike Glennon (Cardinals) and Keenum (Broncos).

Keenum went 11-3 with 3,547 yards passing, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions and threw that last-second heave to Stefon Diggs to stun the New Orleans Saints 29-24 in the playoffs.

Since Peyton Manning's retirement in 2016, the Broncos have featured a revolving door of starting quarterbacks acquired via free agency, a trade and the draft, and none of them has excelled. Atlanta, with former Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp may also be looking for a backup, as is Miami among others.

Broncos president of football operations/general manager John Elway had made finding a long-term solution at quarterback the priority of the offseason after the Broncos limped to a 5-11 finish in 2017 with an offense that finished the year tied for 26th in scoring. His new deal is expected to be a shorter-term contract, with approximately $18 million per year in average pay.

As the free-agent quarterback dried up well before free agency had a chance to open, the Broncos did receive a couple phone calls Tuesday from teams inquiring about quarterback Trevor Siemian, a source told 9NEWS. "Obviously, we have to get better at that (quarterback) position", general manager John Elway said at the National Football League combine.

Keenum would have veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as his targets in Denver after Elway chose not to release either of the expensive wide receivers.

"We all understand how the quarterback position has a direct influence on how your team plays", Joseph said in February.

Despite those questions, quarterbacks are always a hot commodity, and Keenum is coming off an excellent season. After reaching the peak of Super Bowl 50 two years ago, the Broncos have sunk on the heels of two playoffless seasons.

Elway said in recent weeks he still believed the team could get back into the postseason mix with an upgrade behind center.

"I still think we're not too far away", Elway said at the combine. "Obviously, we have to get better there, whoever is going to be the quarterback". "We didn't play well there a year ago". There were some things that we should have done differently that we didn't do. "I think we still have a good defensive football team".
