Saudi Arabia signs deal to purchase 48 Typhoon jets from Britain

The jets are made by British firm BAE Systems, as part of a multi-billion pound deal which has been under discussion for many years.

Saudi Crown Prince reviewed with the UK Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson the means of strategic cooperation and developing defense, military and anti-terrorism efforts, on Friday, at the North Holt Air Base.

"We have taken a vital step towards finalising another order for Typhoon jets that will increase security in the Middle East and boost British industry and jobs in our unrivalled aerospace sector", he said.

That has provided a controversial backdrop to the warm diplomatic welcome for Prince Mohammed, with hundreds turning out on Wednesday to protest arms sales and Saudi Arabia's role in Yemen's civil war.

"We are committed to supporting the Kingdom as it modernizes the Saudi Armed Forces and develops key industrial capabilities critical to the delivery of Vision 2030", he said, referring to Saudi Arabia's economic and social reform program.

Killing and subjecting minors to appalling violence is becoming "normalised" in conflict zones around the world, Save the Children chief executive Kevin Watkins warned.

"The fact that we have the head of state of a government that has been operating such a blockade - Saudi Arabia - recently invited to Buckingham Palace and Downing Street while the military ... is orchestrating what will potentially become the worst starvation in the last 50 years, I think speaks volumes to another aspect of the problem that I want to highlight - the growing sense of impunity surrounding these crimes against children".

Despite an unusual advertising blitz that saw adverts promoting Prince Mohammed and Saudi Arabia appear in national newspapers and on taxis and electronic billboards across London, the visit was knocked from the British front pages by the poisoning of a Russian double agent.

"The fact that you can rape, murder, kidnap, bomb schools, bomb clinics with no effect, speaks I think to the heart of the deeper challenge that we are addressing today".

Before his visit, the 32-year-old Crown Prince talked about the importance of security ties between between the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

But she has also raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen with Prince Mohammed during his visit to the UK.
