Google Maps Will Turn into MARIO KART for Mario Day

To try it out, update your Google Maps Android or iOS app from Google Play or the App Store. This was announced just as Google and Nintendo announced a new partnership ahead of the event scheduled to hold on March 10.

"We don't encourage throwing bananas or red shells at other drivers in real life!" Google says the feature is rolling out globally to Maps users today and will last for one week.

"If you feel like having some extra fun or have some spare time, you can tap on the iconic "?" box 100 times, and you will hear the classic 1-UP sound from Mario games.

As soon as that is enabled, you will notice that the navigation arrow has morphed into Mario.

For its part, Nintendo is celebrating Mario Day with a more traditional offering: between March 10th and March 25th, you can get 50% off Super Mario Run on iOS and Android.

There's also an added bonus if you don't mind some repetitive tapping.

It appears that the Mario Day Easter egg has already begun to roll out to everyone, so expect to see it on your app soon. Going forward, Mario will be your companion wherever you are driving this week-school, work, restaurant-anywhere. If you're so inclined, you can share screenshots of your route and share it on Twitter and Instagram by tagging @GoogleMaps with the hashtag #MarioMaps.

The Google Maps-Mario Kart mashup will be available until March 17.
