'Jurassic World' Gets Its Own 'Pokemon Go'-Style Mobile Game

Universal Studios has announced a tie-in game with the new Jurassic Park movie, and it bears more than a passing resemblance to Pokémon Go, to put it mildly. The location-based, augmented reality game will challenge players to catch dinosaurs, hatch new ones, and cross-breed new ones using DNA cocktails.

Since Michael Crichton first opened the gates to those unsafe dinos with his Jurassic Park novel, there has been a whole movie franchise, more merchandise that you shake a raptor claw at, comic books, and many video games of varying success. They have fled Jurassic World on the unstable island of Isla Nublar... and they're roaming free in your cities and neighbourhoods. And, yes, you'll probably also have to capture and potentially even battle dinosaurs. Being released on iOS and Android, later this spring, Jurassic World Alive conveniently lines its release particularly close to the debut of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

"Jurassic World Alive" is part of Universal's foray into gaming having expanded its game development team in recent months. I'm guessing a large part of Pokemon Go's success was because it was the first game of its kind to hit the mainstream.

One of the key differences between Jurassic World Alive and Pokemon Go is that to play the game and obtain new creatures, you won't actually need to explore in real time (though that element is supported).

"Players discover dinosaurs by locating them on a map and deploying an in-game drone to collect DNA samples", the company told The Verge. The latest is Jurassic World Alive, an AR mobile app that lets users collect dinosaurs.

Other video games connected to the Jurassic Park franchise are on their way, including Jurassic World Evolution, a theme park simulation that will be available for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime this summer. In the game, you'll be playing as a member of the Dinosaur Protection Group, trying to conserve dinosaurs from extinction. God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. "We are thrilled to once again work with Ludia and think this will be the biggest and most exciting game in the franchise yet!"
