Amazon 'aware' of issue causing Echo devices to spontaneously laugh

One Reddit user said that Alexa laughed after the command, "Alexa, patio off", which could sound vaguely like, "Alexa, how do you laugh?"

Reports on social media started around a fortnight ago and they all seem to follow a pattern, an evil laugh and some sort of disobedience, such as failing to follow an order or flashing lights. Moreover, people are saying that the laugh they're hearing isn't in Alexa's usual voice, which makes the experience even creepier. "We're aware of this and working to fix it", a rep for the company said in an email.

While the issue doesn't appear to be widespread-it reportedly is only affecting a small percentage of devices-it is troubling that Amazon has not yet been able to identify the cause of the issue or provide a fix for it.

The technology works by listening for the "wake word", usually programmed as "Alexa" or "Amazon" - and then records your voice and transfers it to a processor for analysis. That outage occurred well after the first recorded incident acknowledging Alexa's apparent laughing problem.

Alexa's spontaneous laughter has been occurring for at least a couple of weeks, as the Twitter user @CaptHandlebar shared a short video of the device's automated chuckle on February 22. My wife was there when it happened and she is the only person who can drop-in. No time table was provided, but I think I'm just going to unplug my Echo for the time being. "I still get chills".

And a tweet by one David Woodland suggested that having Alexa sign a nondisclosure agreement might not be a bad idea.
