Thank You: Guatemala's Jimmy Morales Invited to Pro-Israel AIPAC Conference

Israeli TV channel Hadashot reported Sunday evening that Guatemala, like the USA, is planning to move its embassy to Jerusalem in May. "I would like to thank President Trump for leading the way", he said.

Shortly after the American decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, recognizing it as the official capital of Israel, Guatemala announced that it would follow President Donald Trump's lead and do the same.

Guatemala has announced that it will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, the country's president announced on Sunday.

Prior to 1980, Guatemala and a dozen other countries maintained an embassy in Jerusalem.

The worldwide community does not recognise Israel's annexation of occupied East Jerusalem, and 128 countries backed a non-binding UN General Assembly resolution that called for the U.S. to rescind its move.

"As a sovereign decision, we recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel", Morales said.

The Palestinian ministry called upon the Guatemalan people and their various representatives "to continue exerting pressure to push their government to back down from this unjust decision, which threatens the friendly relations between the Guatemalan and Palestinian people".

The Israeli government considers the entire city to be its undivided capital, although the worldwide consensus is that the city's status should be decided through negotiations and not unilateral moves.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley had warned before the vote that Washington would be "taking names" of those voting against Trump's decision.

The central American country's support may come as a surprise to some but the nation has been a long-time backer of Israel.

The United States is an important source of assistance to Guatemala, and Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that supported the UN resolution. "But I am proving to them I didn't do it just for that, but I did it because it was the right thing to do", Morales, an Evangelical Christian, said last month after receiving an award from a pro-Israel group.

The two discussed deepening bilateral ties and cooperation.
