Katarina Johnson-Thompson wins pentathlon gold for Great Britain

Juan Miguel Echevarria became the youngest male field event victor when he took the long jump and Katarina Johnson-Thompson claimed her first global title in the pentathlon at the world indoor athletics championships on Friday.

It was Bailey Jr.'s first world championship meet.

Just four centimeters separated the top three: Manyonga made 8.44 and defending champion Marquis Dendy of the United States 8.42.

"There might be an option out for Dale, depending on how I throw", Walsh said. "It was very tight with very close margins but I prepared physically and mentally for the event. I will have to step up my game in the European Championships in the summer but I think I can do that". "I came confident and had a good feeling". I had a full winter of training, building on what I had learnt, and it has really paid off.

And it gave Johnson-Thompson Britain's first gold at the championships with 4750 points from Dadic with 4700 and Rodriguez with 4637.

"It's been up and down, it's been a long old day but the crowd pushed me on".

The fourth heat was clearly won by Pozzi from lane eight in a season's best of 7.53 from the 2012 Olympic champion and the world indoor champion that year, Aries Merritt, who ran 7.61.

Meanwhile, Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast ran away from the field to 60m gold in 6.97 sec - the sixth fastest time in history. She edged teammate Marie Josee Ta Lou by 0.43.

The distance was also a personal best for Walsh - indoor and out - and cost his coach Dale Stevenson, who will have to sport huge sideburns for the rest of the year following a wager.

Oliver was NCAA and Southeastern Conference 60m silver medalist a year ago, while Carter ran the leadoff leg on UK's NCAA Champion 4x400m relay last June. I knew he was watching from up there. "Yes, at some point I thought that gold was within reach, but I came here hoping for any medal".

"Emotionally I am at a loss of words".

"I had to decide between the heptathlon and the hurdles and that was a decision I needed to make", said the 23-year-old, who had earlier run a PB of 7.83 in her semi-final.

Walsh and Stevenson also had a bet on the world championships and, after failing to beat his personal best in London, Walsh had to get a tattoo of his coach's choice.

The other gold medalists for Team USA were Will Claye in men's triple jump, Sandi Morris in the women's pole vault, Courtney Okolo in the women's 400, Kendra Harrison in the women's 60-meter hurdles, and the women's 4x400 team.

"The move to France sort of messed up my year last year", she admitted.

It is two less rivals for Pavel Maslak to worry about in the Czech runner's quest for a third successive world indoor title.
