Armenia's Ruling Party Nominee Sarkissian Elected New President - Commission

He holds the seat of former President Sergey Sarkissian, who, according to opposition leaders, may remain in office as prime minister.

With Ruling Party of Armenia, which nominated Sarkissian, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and the Tsarukian bloc endorsing his candidacy, Armenia's next president was named in a vote of 90 to 10.

Armen Sarkissian was elected as President of Armenia on Friday with a large majority of the members of parliament, Reuters and TASS reported.

President [Serge] Sarkisian received on President-elect Sarkissian shortly following his election.

It is noted that he was the only candidate for the presidency.

"This, of course, is a very important event in the life of our people and state, and of course, is a very important milestone on the way of the establishment of the parliamentary democracy".

President-elect Armen Sarkissian thanked incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan for congratulations and best wishes.

"Through the signing of protocols we sought to normalize relations, but we also realized that Turkey might not demonstrate relevant political will and respect its commitments", Nalbandian said on Thursday, March 1.

"As I have stated before, I will devote my knowledge and experience of many years and all my energy to completely fulfil the duties of the President of Armenia and to fully serve the Armenian citizens", he said.

Sarkissian will assume his duties at a special sitting of the National Assembly on April 9. He was prime minister in 1996-97 and served in diplomatic posts, including ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In October 1991, Dr. Sarkissian established the first Armenian Embassy in the West in London.
