Amazon buys smart doorbell maker

Ring was initially conceived to keep neighborhoods safe by letting people have access to affordable home security tools for those who can not afford the more extensive and expensive surveillance systems.

All of that is clearly of interest to Amazon that has also been evincing a keen interest in IoT devices, smart connected homes as well as connected home security apparatus.

Famed for its selection of smart doorbells, security cameras and other security devices, the purchase of the Santa Monica, California firm is Amazon's latest foray into home security. "We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighborhoods".

The Ring video doorbell will start selling at $179 with four doorbells, four security camera-lights and a floodlight.

The company's mission is to reduce crime in neighborhoods while providing affordable options that work for every home.

Ring's product lineup includes several different cameras, with various power options.

Just last month Ring acquired a startup called Mr. Beams that makes WiFi-enabled LED lighting with motion-sensing capabilities. But this isn't the first time Amazon has taken notice of Ring: The online giant invested in the start-up two years ago through its Alexa fund, which provides venture capital for products that use voice technology. Cloud Cam ties in with Amazon Key, a program that gives delivery personnel the ability to deliver boxes inside your home.

Before that, another attempt to eliminate the threat of package theft was the Amazon Locker program.

If Amazon succeeds in turning Alexa into the brains of the modern smart home, then Ring will provide the eyes. All this just goes to show that even companies that don't initially experience success can become as prominent a player as Ring has. The skill has a 2-star rating.

Data provided by a software as a service (SaaS) company showed that Ring has raised $443.9 million so far and was last valued at $760 million.

Earlier it was announced that Amazon would be acquiring Ring, who for those unfamiliar is primarily known for their smart doorbell system.

Ring counts Virgin CEO Richard Branson as an investor. The company will likely be allowed to do business as usual after the deal.
