West Bank and Gaza to Close for Purim

Two Egyptian intelligence officials and a diplomat arrived in Gaza on Sunday, along with government ministers from the Fatah-led Palestinian cabinet in the occupied West Bank, AP said. The IDF described the vessel as "suspicious" in their comments on the incident.

Many Jewish holidays impose great difficulties on the Palestinians living under Israel's military occupation in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and occupied Jerusalem, as these are usually accompanied by such cordons and other restrictive practices. Two Israeli soldiers were reportedly injured in the incident.

Hamas seized control of Gaza from Fatah forces in 2007. The IDF explained then that the decision takes into consideration the financial importance of fishing for Gazans.

The head of the Syndicate of Palestinian Fishermen, Nizar Ayyash, refuted claims that the young fishermen crossed the Israeli-imposed fishing borders. It is an industry that creates jobs not only for the fishermen themselves, but for vendors and restaurant owners as well.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza said it has yet to be informed of any casualties or admissions to hospitals in the Strip. The government did not comment on the strike, while Hamas called on it to perform its duties and to resolve the hard and disastrous humanitarian crises in Gaza.

"Naval forces called on the suspects to stop and when they did not comply, warning shots were fired into the air".

In the meantime, Gaza fishermen say the designated fishing zone is too small to meet the demands of the region's population of roughly two million people.

Israeli forces detained on Monday 19 Palestinians during pre-dawn raids across the West Bank including an injured minor, according to Palestinian Prisoner's Society (PPS).
