Florida officer breaks down recounting Stoneman Douglas school shooting response

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School won the Tier I SAHOF Florida Hockey State Championship Sunday with a 7-4 victory over Jesuit.

Audio will be available later today.

The tragic shooting at Parkland, Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School not only spurred an unprecedented national conversation about the availability of automatic weapons, the commonality of mass shootings, and a history of political complacency, the event also galvanized a new group of vocal, powerful activists.

The proposals follow consultation between Scott and the parents, teachers and students of Parkland. Israel suspended Peterson without pay on Thursday morning, he said, and Peterson then chose to resign.

"I know Mr. Peterson is suffering a tremendous amount of stress right now with the amount of media attention, hate mail and name calling on social media as well, which is all fully expected", said Jim Bell, head of the Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association.

Israel has told CNN that investigators are looking into claims that three other deputies were on the scene but failed to enter the school when the chance to save lives still existed. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Coral Springs Police Sergeant Jeff Heinrich was overcome with emotion as he recounted his response to a crisis unfolding while his wife and son were inside the school. It is also facing backlash for apparently mishandling some of the 18 tipster calls related to the suspected shooter.

Broward Teachers Union President Anna Fusco said Scott's plan to have at least one law enforcement officer for every 1,000 students did not go far enough.

The governor stopped short, however, of endorsing a ban on assault weapons - a demand of numerous teenagers who survived the shooting at Stoneman Douglas that left 14 of their classmates and three staff dead.

"They act like they don't own these politicians".

Members of the community occasionally stopped by to drop off fresh flowers or offer a prayer at the memorial that has formed at the campus.

The plan will require mandatory active shooter training at all schools.

The call to arm teachers has drawn sharp dissent from the student leaders - and Broward schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. "Weapons have no place in a learning environment".
