Dems Flip KY House Seat In District Trump Won By Huge Margin

Democrat Linda Belcher, left, won the Kentucky House of Representatives seat representing the 49th District. That represents a 38-point point swing to the Democrats since the 2016 election, in which she lost to Dan Johnson, a thoroughly reprehensible person who turned out to be a Confederate sympathizer who called himself the "pope" of his church, lied about being President George W. Bush's chaplain at the World Trade Center after 9/11, and later faced accusations that he sexually molested an underage girl. "Democrats are organizing, investing and winning elections in red districts across the country as voters reject Donald Trump and the Republican agenda".

According to an extremely useful comprehensive spreadsheet compiled by Daily Kos, across 70 special elections in 2017, Democrats ran 10 points ahead of Clinton and 7 points ahead of Obama's 2012 results.

He beat then-incumbent Belcher by less than one point by riding the red wave that gave Republicans control of Kentucky's state House for the first time in almost a century. It's also the 37th time a Democrat has won a GOP-held seat this cycle, and it comes hot on the heels of Team Blue pickups in Florida and Wisconsin.

"People are using their votes and voices to take a stand against the anti-Kentuckian policies of the Republican majority", Ben Self, chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party, said in a statement.

The Kentucky district is the 18th formerly Republican-held district to fall into Democratic hands in a special election since Trump won the election.

Despite the lopsided results, Johnson refused to concede, citing "widespread voter fraud". Mooney said if all of the affected voters had voted for Johnson, it would not have changed the outcome.

Belcher, former school teacher and principal, also entered politics after her husband died in a 2008 auto accident.

Belcher told a reporter Bullitt County "has spoken what it wants".

Belcher said it was "hard to say" if sexual assault allegations against Dan Johnson and his death played a part in the election, adding: "I have tried to stay very positive and away from that whole situation".
