Democrat denounces President Trump's tweet as 'false smears'

Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, said, "I think this is a separate issue".

"I think it's a disgrace".

Alberto Gonzales: "I have no confidence whatsoever in what's going to come out of the House".

Calling on Trump not to interfere in Mueller's investigation, four Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee dismissed on Sunday the idea that the memo's criticism of how the FBI handled certain surveillance applications undermines the special counsel's work. He was later paid by the Democratic National Committee, the campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations to dig up information on Trump.

The Senate's Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer of NY, urged Trump to back the public release and said that refusing to do so would show the president's intent to undermine the Russian Federation investigation.

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., wrote a letter to Trump on Sunday telling the president that if he does not release the Democrats' memo, it "will confirm the American people's worst fears that the release of Chairman Nunes' memo was only meant to undermine Special Counsel Bob Mueller's investigation".

The op-ed comes amid Republicans' increased scrutiny of the Justice Department and the FBI for their handling of the Russian Federation investigation.

The FBI director has not yet indicated that he will do so, but urged employees on Friday to "keep doing your great work and keep being the great people you are".

The FBI had objected to the memo's release, saying it had "grave concerns" that the document gave an inaccurate account of the application to carry out surveillance on Page.

Despite the memo's charges, neither the focus on Page nor the FBI's investigation of Trump-Russia ties began with the Steele dossier. Broadly, the memo alleges that the collusion investigation is a politically motivated witch-hunt against Trump by conspirators in the FBI and US Department of Justice, and that the FBI is engaged in a cover-up of its own political motivations.

"The most trending hashtag on Kremlin-controlled botnets as we speak is 'release the memo, '" Hayden said.

In his first comments since the House Intelligence Committee released a once-secret and controversial memo, President Donald Trump on Saturday said the Republican-penned document vindicates him, once again asserting that there was "no collusion" between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

On Saturday, Schiff responded to Trump's tweet by claiming that - far from vindicating the president - the memo in fact proved "quite the opposite". He said it laid bare "serious violations of the public trust, and the American people have a right to know when officials in crucial institutions are abusing their authority for political purposes". The officials were not authorized to be quoted about private deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A number of Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee that voted to release the memo took to the Sunday morning news airwaves to counter the president's assertion.

Trump and his allies are attacking key American institutions in order to discredit an investigation into foreign interference in a presidential election. One of the White House officials said the memo would be in "Congress' hands" after Trump declassified it and there were unlikely to be any redactions to the document.

The memo's release also comes amid an effort by Trump and congressional Republicans to discredit Mueller's investigation.

Democrats could seek a vote on publicly releasing their rebuttal memo when the GOP-led House Intelligence Committee meets late Monday afternoon.

"Quite the opposite, Mr President", Schiff said in a tweet. If every Fox News personality kicks off their shows this weekend by reassuring the president that The Memo is the bombshell he wants it to be, it won't be long until he believes it with every fiber of his being.
