If Kyrgios had defeated Zverev, there would have been another singles match (Rubber No. 5) between Jan-Lennard Struff and Alex de Minaur on Sunday.

The sight of John Millman practising with the Australian team has further fuelled speculation that rookie teenager Alex de Minaur may miss what looms as a crunch Davis Cup singles rubber against Germany in Brisbane today.

De Minaur broke in the fifth game of the second set, making the most of Zverev's 23 unforced errors to claim it in 45 minutes.

The No. 139-ranked de Minaur is the lowest-ranked singles player in 's squad, but de Minaur made the Sydney International final and the Brisbane International semifinals in early January.

Once Zverev broke to go ahead 3-1 the result was never really in doubt and at 2-5, Kyrgios was broken again to give Germany the tie.

The best of five hardcourt tie's victor advances to the quarterfinals from April 6-8 while the losing nation will contest September's World Cup playoffs.

Hewitt said de Minaur would be given more time to prove his fitness. I'm going to take a week off now to try and get it better.

After the nations draw level on Day 1 of their 2018 Davis Cup clash at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane, the German duo of Peter Gojowczyk and Tim Puetz survived a five-set marathon against Australian tandem Matthew Ebden and John Peers during a doubles contest on Saturday. "It affected me a fair bit in my match", Kyrgios said. He [Zverev] played great. he served well. "But my biggest weapon was not really there and that affects the rest of my game", added Kyrgios.

He teamed up with Chris Guccione to suffer Australia's only defeat in their 2013 World Group playoff 4-1 win in Poland.
