JJ Abrams' New Sci-Fi Drama 'Demimonde' Lands on HBO

After a long, protracted bidding war with Apple TV, HBO has won the opportunity to work with JJ Abrams in developing his brand new television series, "Demimonde".

Hollywood Reporter says Abrams was impressed with HBO's handling of Westworld, and that may have been what swayed Abrams to sign a deal with the network. Her father ends up in the world with her. HBO is reportedly describing the series as "an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama".

Abrams will write the pilot and serve as executive producer, alongside Ben Stephenson, who runs the TV division of Abrams' production company Bad Robot.

Demimonde is described as a series about a scientist mom, her husband and daughter who are in a auto crash, leaving her in a coma.

Demimonde is unique in that it's the first series created and written exclusively by Abrams since ABC's Alias. Looking through her experiments, her daughter is transported to another world. Abrams' secret (until recently) project Demimonde officially has a home.

For HBO, Abrams' Demimonde joins a drama slate that also includes Westworld, Game of Thrones' final season, Big Little Lies, True Detective, The Deuce, the upcoming debut of Sharp Objects, Succession and Alan Ball's Here and Now, among others. Now, he's be returning to the cable network with another intriguing new sci-fi series. The series will be produced by Bad Robot in association with Warner Bros. Apple, which also aggressively pursued the project, already picked up a space drama from Ron Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander).
