Arab League Requests International Aid for Palestinian State

UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness said the agency had not been "informed directly of a formal decision either way by the USA administration".

Praising Mr Trump's "critical approach" on the aid issue, Mr Netanyahu steered clear of advocating a suspension of funding for the Palestinians.

Pence will hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Jordan's King Abdullah and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House said.

Also, SIS said that Saeed Hassaseen whose talk show stopped several weeks before the Jerusalem decision and who does not now present any other TV show.

UNRWA vowed to continue providing assistance to displaced Palestinians despite attacks from the USA and Israel, according to Al Jazeera.

Netanyahu, however, sees a threat in the "right to return" principle extended to over 5 million registered Palestinian refugees and the descendants of those who fled their native land in the wake of the 1948 exodus of Palestine and the 1967 Six-Day War.

Netanyahu's statement came after US President Donald Trump and his United Nations ambassador, Nikky Haley, had also threatened to cut financial aid to the Palestinians, including to UNRWA, if the Palestinians do not return to the negotiation table with Israel.

"While UNRWA is far from ideal, the Israeli defense establishment, and the Israeli government as a whole, have over the years come to the understanding that all the alternatives are worse for Israel", Peter Lerner, a former spokesman for the Israeli military, wrote in an opinion piece in Haaretz newspaper last week.

Trump in early December reversed decades of USA policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, despite warnings it would further drive a wedge between Israel and the Palestinians.

Earlier in the week, Trump complained on Twitter that "we pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect".

The United States is the largest donor to UNRWA, with a pledge of almost $470 million as of 2016, according to the organisation's website.

The U.S., by far the biggest contributor to the UN Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA, had been expected to deliver the payment on January 2. Another UN body, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), deals with all other refugees in the world. But they need to understand that the bedraggled and much-maligned two-state solution remains at the moment the only realistic hope for resolving the conflict.
