Manhunt on for suspect in killing of Washington state deputy

A sheriff's deputy was shot and killed near Tacoma, Wash., Sunday night.

A sheriff's deputy in Washington State died after he was shot while chasing a burglary suspect.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer identified the deputy as 34-year-old Daniel McCartney, of Yelm. Some clothing was found by deputies that they believe he left behind.

He leaves behind a wife and three young boys, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said. He was transported to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he died.

One of two suspects was also killed during the exchange, according to the sheriff's department.

The deputy arrived on scene and became involved in a foot pursuit with a male suspect, during which shots were fired and the deputy was struck.

Investigators described the suspect as mixed race or white, tall and thin with curly dark hair in a ponytail, a large pointy nose, with pock marks on the right side of his face.

He served with Pierce County for some three years.

There are road closures as a result, and the Bethel School District has now made a decision to close its schools today.

"This man lived a life of duty and obligation and sacrifice", said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor.

A legacy fund has been set up at TAPCO Credit Union for the fallen deputy's family.
