Packers continue GM interviews with top internal candidate Friday

Gutekunst worked as director of player personnel in Green Bay under Ted Thompson for the last six seasons and was as rising candidate for multiple front-office jobs around the league.

Green Bay will promote director of player personnel Brian Gutekunst to general manager, NFL Media first reported.

By hiring Gutekunst, Murphy passed over Russ Ball, the team's Vice-President of Football Operations/Player Finance and Eliot Wolf, the son of former GM Ron Wolf, now the team's Director of Football Operations. Former NFL linebacker and Oakland Raiders general manager cut his teeth in scouting in Green Bay under legendary general manager Ron Wolf from 1994 to 2011.

The #Packers are swinging big on their GM search.

That's good news for Mike McCarthy, who reportedly isn't in good graces with Ball and could've been out as the Packers' head coach if Ball was named GM.

Gutekunst, 44, has been with the Packers since 2012 and became the team's director of player personnel in 2016.

After Green Bay took Gutekunst off the market, it appears there's a leader in the clubhouse for the Texans job - and it's not a Patriots staffer. After all, Gutekunst has spent the past 14 years working under Thompson in the front office. He was promoted to director of player personnel for the Packers back in March of 2016 and has spent almost two decades in the team's front office.
