One dead, one hurt in blast outside Stockholm Metro

A man has died and a woman been injured after an explosion outside a metro station in Stockholm.

The man, in his 60s, was taken to hospital but later died, while his companion, a woman in her mid-40s, received minor wounds to her face and both legs, Mr Olsson said.

The man is reportedly seriously injured.

A police spokesman said an object exploded after it was picked up, adding there was no reason to believe the event was terrorism-related.

Citing Swedish newspapers, several reports suggest the explosive device was a hand grenade.

Police cordoned off the station and the square where the blast happened as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

"It is too early to say".

Police said fragment damages on the victims and findings at the scene indicated the explosive could be a hand grenade, possibly an old one.

According to a Swedish police report published previous year, Sweden is the European country where criminal gangs use the most grenades, often from stocks from the former Yugoslavia.
