Here's What Trump Wants in Deal to Protect Dreamers

President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security has requested $18 billion in funding to complete a wall on a portion of the US southern border in an effort to stop illegal immigration, one congressional source and one USA official told NBC News on Friday. At one point during his campaign, Trump estimated it would cost $10 billion for the entire 2,000-mile border, NBC News reports.

The White House asked Congress for $18 billion dollars for a border wall, to go along with a laundry list of other hard-line immigration policies like "money to hire 10,000 additional immigration officers, tougher laws for those seeking asylum, and denial of federal grants to so-called 'sanctuary cities'".

According to Congressman Henry Cuellar, the Trump Administration has started talks about putting up 130 miles of wall or fencing along the border in the Webb County area. The entire border stretches nearly 2,000 miles, although much of it is already impassable.

In return for the cash, the Trump administration will be expected to discuss a way forward for the so-called dreamers - illegal immigrants who were brought to the U.S. by their parents and know no other country. The demands include $18 billion for 700 miles of border wall, tightening the rules for allowing unaccompanied minors to enter the country and limiting "chain migration", which allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the minority whip, called the $18 billion request "outrageous". "With this demand, he seems to be heading in that direction", Durbin said in a statement.
