Greenville Kmart among 103 stores slated to close

Sears is scheduled to close its store in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesborough in three weeks, but the bloodletting at the once vibrant national retailer isn't over yet.

The Sears at 5900 W. Glades Road is shuttering as part of a nationwide downsizing that's closing 39 Sears stores and 64 Kmart stores, Sears Holdings Corp. announced Thursday.

Sears stores elsewhere in Alaska - in Fairbanks, Wasilla and Juneau - were not among the latest closures.

In the NY area, the Sears located in Hicksville, on Long Island, is expected to close, as well as one in Toms River, New Jersey.

A spokesperson for Sears Holdings declined to say how many employees will be affected by the closings.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as January 12 at the stores being closed, the company stated.

The Sanford Kmart on South Horner Boulevard will close its doors for the final time in April.

Macy's also announced the closing of 11 stores on Thursday, though none in New England.

In New York state, a KMart is scheduled to close in Plattsburgh, along with a Sears in Kingston.

It wasn't clear from the release how many employees will lose their jobs in this latest wave of contraction, but it said eligible sales associates at the affected locations will receive severance packages and can apply for open positions at other Kmart or Sears stores near them.

The decline of Sears Holdings has been swift in recent years.
