Conor McGregor & Dana White Slam 'Weasel' Stephen Espinoza

As Tony Ferguson now holds the UFC interim lightweight championship, lightweight competitor Dustin Poirier recently stated in an interview with Bloody Elbow that he believes Nurmagomedov serves as more of a threat to McGregor than Ferguson in a match.

That is not OK with White, so he is putting a deadline on McGregor and using the champ's belt to do it.

Common sense would dictate that McGregor's comeback fight would come in a unification bout against Ferguson but, as we've learned, common sense is a rarity in the sport of mixed martial arts.

He continued on to cite his own figures, insisting that Mayweather vs. McGregor did 6.7 million buys worldwide, and would have done up to 7 million if the streaming service had not crashed right before the fight started.

The main question is whether the UFC can offer McGregor a deal to entice him back after he made a mammoth $100 million from the Floyd Mayweather fight.

After Espinoza responded to a tirade from White on the domestic take for the August 26 boxing match between McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Floyd Mayweather (50-0 boxing), the UFC lightweight champion got in the middle to back up his promoter. Take the belt from him, stop talking about "if Conor comes back" and focus on the things you can control like continuing to make the most exciting and compelling matchups possible, at lightweight and throughout the organization.

"I don't think Conor wants to fight until August, but if he waits until August or September, that's around two years since the belt has been defended and that can't happen", White told Yahoo Sports. Some believe Nurmagomedov could be next for McGregor, if not at least a shot at the interim title with Ferguson.

"As long as Conor is willing to fight by March, we could do Khabib vs". If he decides he doesn't want to fight again for another however long, then that's up to him.

"You know, think about this, and I don't give a s-t about Showtime's f--ing full-of s-t press release they put out", White said. Tony Ferguson claimed the interim title by knocking Kevin Lee out of contention with a triangle choke in the main event of UFC 216. That's his choice and his decision but, the belt has to move on.
