After gritty battle over portfolio, Gujarat Deputy CM Nitin Patel emerges victorious

The Patidar leader on Saturday said Nitin Patel should join the Congress party, if he can manage to bring along 10 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs. I think Nitin Patel is an old worker of ours and he can not be made unhappy.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel is back in office. He had a busy day yesterday with strong Patidar leaders including Lalji Patel of the Sardar Patel Group and Hardik Patel extending their support to him.

A day after Patidar leader Hardik Patel offered Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel to join Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday rejected his proposal saying that their party leaders are loyal and can not be lured by anyone. "If the BJP is not respecting Patels, then they should leave the party and should accompany Nitin Patel".

Saurabh Patel now remains to be the only leader in the present cabinet with only one department, i.e. energy.

"Amitbhai called me this morning at 7.30 am and communicated that my prestige will be maintained and assured to allot a suitable portfolio".

In the previous government, Patel used to handle important portfolios like finance and urban development.

"He has extracted what he wanted and also exposed the party's vulnerability and how it can now easily be blackmailed", a top insider in the government said. In 2001, the first and only portfolio Nitin Shah was given was the finance ministry.

"I told everybody that I should be given suitable ministries". Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Sunday afternoon made the announcement of allotment of the finance portfolio to Patel, who was upset over the allocation of portfolios not suitable to his "stature and experience". "I thank him for the assurance", he said. Nitin Patel is a very senior leader. "As a veteran politician, Nitin bhai has worked hard for 27 years to ensure that the BJP stays in power".

Nitin Patel, 61, is MLA from Mehsana and among the senior-most BJP leaders in the government. "I will continue to work for the party", Patel said, adding that there was no chance of him quitting the party or joining the Congress. Patidar leader Hardik Patel offered to broker a deal between the Congress and Nitin Patel should he walk away from the BJP along with his supporters. However, the Congress soon clarified that Thummar spoke in his personal capacity while terming the turmoil as the BJP's "internal matter". "I had expressed my feelings to the Chief Minister and also to the party high command, including the party president Amit Shah", Mr. Patel said, stressing that he never threatened to resign from the party as was reported in a section of media.
