1400 cars destroyed in Liverpool vehicle park fire

A spokeswoman for the Echo Arena said: "We regret to announce that the Liverpool International Horse Show has been cancelled tonight due to a serious fire in the multi-storey auto park on site".

Witnesses described abandoning their vehicles, grabbing possessions and running for their lives after the blaze broke out in an old Land Rover and rapidly spread.

An evening session of the Liverpool International Horse Show has been cancelled after horses were evacuated to safety. The charred remains of ruined vehicles were visible in the seven stories of the parking garage.

A blaze that destroyed 1,400 vehicles as it swept through a multi-storey auto park on New Year's Eve could have been halted by sprinklers, a fire chief said today.

Witness Sue Wright, who helped move some of the horses, said flames were shooting out of the Land Rover engine. It looked like a ball of fire on the front of the auto and it was producing a lot of smoke. It was all insignificant as long as everyone was OK and we could get the horses out. The blaze started Sunday afternoon.

She said the fire was "ferocious and spreading".

'Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 4.42pm and crews were on the scene at 4.50pm.

Nearby apartments were evacuated because of the heavy smoke.

Police are urging anyone with affected vehicles to contact their insurance companies directly.
